Pastels are virtually pure pigment,  applied directly to the surface to be painted.  Unlike oils, pastels are inert and do not oxidize. Therefore, they are quite durable.  The colors do not change or fade.  The best  surfaces  have  a “tooth,” such as Kitty Wallis Museum Sanded Paper, allowing up to 25 layers of pastel to be

applied.  Hundreds of pastel colors exist ready-made and others

may be created by this layering technique.  Pastels must always be framed under glass; if touched, the color will smear.
